Dear Christine,

Another thing to mention might be cluster feeding (If you haven't). If baby is going 3 or more hours between feeds at all or most other times then
this could be the baby wanting to cluster feed (even though he is getting so much milk, so the one sided nursing could help with the abundance of
milk and spitting up during this time). Suggest she offer more often during the day. She could be so used to the longer periods that she has not
noticed quiet alert, or other hunger cues, because she thinks that "yea!, I can get a few things done because baby is sleeping or quiet
and seemingly not asking." Even though mom is very attentive you could mention this just in case.

So, baby is finding their quiet time together at night to be the perfect time to nurse, nurse, nurse. It is easy to fall into the habit of needing more
mom time and not realizing that baby might actually need more holding or nursing because of the perception that 3 hours (or more) is normal
between feeds. (That does equal only the minimum (8 times) if nursed around the clock). Remind her that babies don't always evenly space
feeds with some being closer than others, especially if baby is having lots of the longer periods.

Actually, helped one mother who understood the cluster feeds very well, she had several 4 hour periods during a day and several cluster feed
periods and dealt with it wonderfully. This was her 2nd breastfed baby and she just realized this was a different baby, than her first. (was at ease
with this after reading a handout on cluster feeding and individuality in nursing patterns.) It worked for her and baby is thriving.
