Joy,

Another possibility could be a nursing strike. Possible causes: Baby is
ill----such as an ear infection. Some babies increase their nursing
during illnesses, while others refuse to nurse. Has mom and baby's life
become more hectic and busy? If a teething baby bites mom who then
reacts strongly, this may frighten the baby. Sometimes the cause will
not be known.

It will take persistence on the mom's part to work gently with baby. Mom
should not force baby back to breast. Some suggestions to get baby back
to breast include: lots of skin to skin contact, focus more attention on
baby, get in a warm bath together, nurse when baby is sleepy or asleep,
vary nursing positions, nurse when in motion. Have mom express some milk
and massage it over her breasts. Drip some on baby's lips. Have mom use
warm compresses to stimulate her let down before baby nurses. Until baby
comes back to breast, mom can give ebm in a cup. Lack of sucking may
encourage baby back to breast quicker.

Hope this helps.

Aloha,
