Dear fellow Lactneters:

Questions asked wtih the permission of the mom.
This mom very successfully nursed her first child after initial issues.
During this second current pregnancy she was found to have a breast lump
which was biopsied and was Dx as a High grade phyllodes tumor. She has a
partial mastectomy and was told there would be no further treatment except
for rigorous follow ups particularly in the next three years (during which
time this type of tumor has the highest risk of regrowth). She is
scheduled for a repeat C/S November 17 followed 10 days later by a series
of breast, lung and abdomen scans with contrast. This will continue every
three months for at least 3 years. The oncologist and breast surgeon are
advising her not to breast feed on the unaffected breast because because
they feel the lactating breast will be too difficult to scan/visualize
properly and this would ultimately pose too much risk for the mom. My
research has told me that is rarely spreads to the other side but mom is at
this point concerned about the risk of proper and prompt detection. I
would appreciate any info that anyone might have or if there is a
suggestion of a specialist-oncologist/breast surgeon who may have a strong
knowledge base re lactation.
Thanks very much,
Ellen Lasser CPNP IBCLC
