One question before I start discussions in my NICU on how to mix HMF into
EBM: If freezing the milk also breaks apart the proteins, can any more
damage be done by shaking it to mix in the HMF? The majority of EBM used in
my NICU is frozen defrosted.
OK so I lied: one more question. If powdered HMF is difficult to mix into
the fresh or defrosted EBM, is there some device that can be sterilized that
can be used to gently stir the stuff in? In our NICU, the EBM with HMF used
in continuous feeds is changed out every 2 hours because the tubing gets
clogged. Otherwise, it's 4 hours for either EBM or ABM (even though the ABM
companies say theirs is good for 8 hours).
