My colleagues and I (all No. California Kaiser LC's, BTW) are finding
milk supply problems with our older moms who are also infertility
problems. Any one else noticing the same thing. We are working with 5
or 6 or them right now. Our most perplexing: 39 y.o. G4P1 with 6 wk
old boy. Initial slow wt gain in the baby despite all the usual
measures - increased frequency and duration, LC observation and home
visits, etc. Finally started with SNS and EBP. Weight picks up with
SNS but he quickly learned to "suck the tube" and wouldn't nurse
longer than 5 minutes. Marathon nursing session without SNS lead to 2.
5 oz wt loss this past weekend. Mom is taking fenugreek caps, 3 caps
TID, which helped increase supply some. I have suggested very
thorough pedi exam to rule out any neuro problems leading to sucking
problems. Any other suggestions? Also, if anyone else is using
fenugreek, what would be a maximum daily dose? P.S. Mom's prolactin
level is fine, has let-down and baby can get an ounce if feeding x 5
min fairly well w/ ac and pc wts.)
