Hi All,

A former client of mine is starting the process of adopting an infant and
had some unique questions for me. She's currently breastfeeding an 18-month
old and plans to tandem nurse her adopted infant. She's not sure how much
contact the infant will have with his/her birth mother following the birth,
but she assumes the baby will go directly to a nursery immediately after
birth, then to her. She wondered if there was any risk to her or her
tandem-nursing toddler from the adopted infant, such as HIV, hepatitis, and
so on. My resources cover diseases transmittable from mom to baby, but not
reverse. Any worries/precautions?

TIA,

Debbie Gillespie, IBCLC, LLLL
