Julia, there *are* indeed male lc's! :o))
As for the value of personal experience with breastfeeding... very
interesting topic indeed.
Not all cardiologists have had heart problems and they can nevertheless be
good doctors.
Neither have all midwives gone through the transition of becoming a mother.
Then again... those who did (cardiologists and midwives and more), seem to
have a very different view on how care should be arranged.
Can we say that the breastfeeding experience is equivalent to other health
issues when it comes to having gone through them?
I don't think so, but I may very well be very biased...! hahaha
I'm very curious to see how others feel!

Bye,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands

Subject: [LACTNET] non-breastfeeding LCs/male LCs

Let me preface this by saying that it is only a question and I am not
sharing my thoughts either way.
I wanted to know what you all think about Lactation Consultants who have
never breastfed before? Do you think a LC who has never personally breastfed
can be as effective a LC as one who has?
Also, I do not think there are any in existence (other than the one on "The
Office"), but what would you all think about male LCs?
I was thinking about this over the weekend because I know some LCs who have
never breastfed, or have any children for that matter and I am interested on
getting your thoughts.

Thanks!

Julia Augur IBCLC, RLC
