Nursing mothers may get a break
Suburb to consider breast-pump policy

In a county that is home to one of the largest suppliers of breast pumps in the world, a village may take an avant-garde stand to support moms who return to work toting briefcases and breast pumps.

The Lake in the Hills Village Board will vote Thursday night on a policy that would give the same legal protections to employees who express milk for their babies as mothers who breast-feed in public. The policy would specify that the women wouldn't have to wait for a scheduled break to pump.

"Many employers don't allow that. They say you have to do that on a scheduled break," said Kristeen Rogers, a lactation consultant in Crystal Lake. "Even when it's protected by law, I found employers who don't allow [pumping]."
