Hello, is it just me, who thinks this might be actually harmful?
If the mother is discharged after 48 hours, and in some cases less, and the
baby is in the hospital "due to the feeding problem". How does the
resolution will actually happen? I think in most cases the mother will be
"strongly" encouraged to bottle feed. I gave birth in two of the New York's
hospitals over the past thirteen years - 6 kids. Nether hospital had an LC.
I was told to call the 800 number if I had a problem. It is even worse if
your pediatrician does not have privileges at the hospital, one is attended
then by pediatric residents, who are not a fount of information.
The last time I had a baby the hospital, a large Brooklyn facility did not
have even one functioning pump!
It seems to me that the Mom at 48 hours after the baby's birth is not well
enough to sit up all hours in the visiting room - the most common
accommodation for discharged mothers - and try to breastfeed, when the
nurses have time for her, or every three hours, or whatever the policy is.
Especially if the mom is not totally committed to begin with, or is a first
timer. How can one treat only half of the nursing dyad?
Would make much more sense to discharge them with the follow up from a
visiting nurse and a referral to the LC.

Henya Kazatchkov in Brooklyn,
Impatiently waiting for my own baby to come.
