Janet,
It is very individual. My last child at 3 was nursing way more than 6-7 times
a day. She loved it more than anything and didn't really think food was to
satisfy hunger. At 3.5 I established some ground rules and we slowed down. I
was pretty conflicted because it wasn't really child-led at that point but
hey we were still nursing maybe 6 times in 24 hours.  At 4.5 she was only
nursing at bedtime and once during the night. She wanted to go on a sleepover
with a friend. I asked her what she would do about nursing and she said, "Oh
they can just give me a glass of milk," which they did and a few days later
after asking to nurse she said, "There's no milk left." And that was it. I
actually had thoughts about trying to relactate, but realized she had weaned
herself which was what I wanted. I was kind of sad though. My son though
weaned himself at 24 months. He had always been more of a nurse for nutrition
baby. They are all different.
