There's also concern about high levels of alumnium, IIRC, Nina....in
the UK you can buy soy formula off the shelf, but it can also be
prescribed. Doctors should not prescribe it without the baby having
had a formal diagnosis of intolerance/allergy to cows milk formula
(either the protein content or the lactose). Very occasionally, I
hear of a baby being prescribed it after a serious bout of
gastro-enteritis, when it's thought the baby may be temporarily
lactose intolerant (these are ff babies).

A few years back, there was a definite fashion for soy formula - bf
mothers whose health visitors 'told' them to supplement were advised
to give soy formula as if this was somehow 'better' than ordinary
formula. In fact, I would say it was thought of as being 'up market'.
I see the same thing happening with one of the brands of ordinary
formula today (Aptamil) - it is slightly more expensive, slightly
more difficult to get hold of, and its packaging is slightly more
sophisticated.
