Hello all,
Does anyone have specific information regarding normal flora found in
cultures performed on breast milk? I need very specific information with
regards to organism type and number (amount) so that a decision can be
made regarding safety of EBM feedings in a VLBW infant in the NICU. We do
not routinely perform cultures in our unit (in this case there were
concerns regarding contamination) so I want to make sure we acurately
interpret the results. I have done a literature review (online, looked in
Lawrence, HMBANA guidelines, etc, etc) and found a great deal of general
information about normal skin flora, but no definitives.
To date the culture has grown staph epidermidis and aureus, which I know
are normal flora, but it has also grown enterobacteriaceae, which I was
concerned about.
I would appreciate ANY guidance from anyone versed in this information or
who can point me to a specific piece of literature that provides normal
growth amount and organism information.
We are currently no mail, so I would appreciate replies to:

Thank you in advance for your help!!!
