This week's Newsweek magazine has a 12-page special advertising section about
the benefits of drinking milk. Parents are told to set a good example for our
kids by drinking 3 to 4 glasses of milk a day. During pregnancy they say that
drinking at least three glasses of fat free and lowfat milk will be beneficial
for both you and your growing fetus. "And once you've had the baby you'll
need at least three glasses a day while nursing."

Oh really?

The "you need to drink milk to make milk" myth is a common one that we try to
dispel at La Leche League meetings. We tell the moms that there is no evidence
that particular foods or drinks affect milk supply. Milk supply is determined
mainly by supply and demand-the more often a baby effectively suckles, the
more milk there will be.

I've left my comments at 1-800-WHY MILK. Am I the only one who is more than
tired of the "milk mustache" ads?
