Barbara Wilson-Clay writes a great succinct letter about the ethics. It is
the critical issue of timing and captive audiences that bothers me. As
women leave the 'security' of the hospital environment, the influence of a
health professional's words about using breast pumps can be significant in
shaping her decision to buy/rent/use a breast pump, particularly early in
the bf experience.

I also have concerns as to whether the close relationship between
breastfeeding associations (we've discussed LCs relationship) and pump
companies (an exclusive relationship in several obvious examples) could
also lead many breastfeeding women to conclude that breastfeeding and pumps
are so inter-dependent, like the old song says "you can't have one without
the other". (I'm not suggesting pumps are never used or recommended...)

The marketing of pumps around the world is not just a problem in Saudi
Arabia as Maureen Minchin mentioned, but in many other countries (third
world especially) where those who work there report that pumps are not only
irrelevant but potentially dangerous.
