Hi, Nicola: I'd like to pass along opinions of our mothers and nurses who
have experience with different pumps. Our hospital recently switched from
Medela pumps to Ameda pumps for a variety of reasons. During our several
months trial period I kept getting the same comments over and over: the
Ameda pump is much gentler on the nipples, feels better, and moms say they
get more milk. Re: the Symphony (we still have one available because we
own it), many moms say they don't like the 2 minute rapid cycle - "It's
annoying" is a frequent comment. They are aware that they can skip that
phase with the push of a button. I get mostly neutral comments on the
Symphony, with only a few moms reporting a noticeable difference in amounts
pumped. I paid particular attention to what the staff was saying about the
pumps. Hands down, both staff and mothers feel that the Ameda pump is much
easier to set up and use. We currently have several nurses who are pumping
at work and they all have told me that they are getting more milk compared
to Medela and Ameda is much gentler on the nipples.
I still maintain that for every pump on the market, there exists at least
one mother who loves it.
How prevalent is hand expression in Ireland? I'm under the impression that
double electric pumps are mostly an American phenomenon and that the rest
of the world relies pretty heavily on hand expression, which I personally
rate second in efficiency only to the baby, having successfully hand
expressed after returning back to work full-time for each of my babies.
My 2 cents worth this morning.
