I've been a lurker since I began peer counseling with nursing mothers
counsel three years ago and always learn a ton from reading the posts.
Since then I've taken a CLE course and begun regular work in a hospital
based practice with excellent IBCLCs and hospital nursing staff to learn
from.

My question is what advice do you have for a mom expecting twins one of
whom has a cleft defect? She nursed her first baby for two years and is
quite distressed to learn that one of her new babies may have difficulty
nursing at all. She said the doctor told her that the ultrasound indicates
some cleft involving the palate, but, of course, the full extent of the
anatomical involvement won't be known until birth. The mom is a personal
friend of mine who asked me to research for her. She anticipates the need
to pump. By the time the babies are born I will have relocted to Memphis,
TN (any lactnetters there?), so I'll not be able to provide direct support
for her though we have several wonderful IBCLCs in the area. Any
suggestions are welcome. I did search the archives, but didn't find much
that seemed to fit this particular scenario.

Thanks and eager to receive the thoughts of you wise ones,

Susan Rook PT, CCE, CLE
mom to two preemies, now 4 and 2,who started me down the road to becoming
a breastfeeding counselor
