Chris asked about medical school education regarding breastfeeding.  I
don't know about the MD schools, but at the osteopathic medical school that
I attend, BF is strongly recommended by the majority of the faculty who
discuss it.  When I say "strongly" I mean that 3 of 4 professors I've had
so far who include BF in their curriculum are quite adamant in stressing
how very important and superior breastmilk is to any alternative, and how
dangerous formula is for infants. One professor even said "there is no
excuse" for formula feeding, given the availability of pumps, etc.  Go
profs! (However, there is a 4th faculty member who downplays any difference
between breastmilk and formula and who insists in her lectures that it has
to be mom's choice how to feed the baby.)
I think most of my classmates, at least those who have talked to me about
it, (especially after noticing me breastfeed my ds at the back of the
lecture halls) have been able to decide for themselves that the right to
breastfeed is a basic right of infants (not mom's lifestyle choice) and
clearly understand the health benefits.  Thankfully, I don't know of any
classmate who disagrees who intends to go into pediatrics.  That is, those
of us who are interested in peds, as far as I know, are staunch supporters
of BF.
