Enbrel has a huge molecular weight, is not orally given. Although not reviewed, it should be safe for breastfeeding mothers. See Thomas Hale. But logically, if the mother can't use the drug unless given parenterally, not orally, even if it DID enter the milk, how could it be absorbed by the baby?

I am counseling a mother of a 6 week old who has held off from treatment with Embrel until last week. She used Embrel one time. Now her RA has become so bad that she returned to the doctor who has recommended another Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) blocker Simponi. Do have experience with this drug? According to the medication instructions (if you) "are breastfeeding. You and your doctor should decide if you will take SIMPONI or breastfeed. You should not do both without talking to your doctor first."

Also, can I share the wonderful information you included in your posting regarding RA or do you have anything else that I can help this young mother? Thank you, Dana RN, IBCLC
