a friend of mine who is a nutritionist, gut expert and alternative
health practitioner commented on the probiotic study:

<<Unfortunately they did not use a potent multi-bacteria probiotic such
as
Jarrodophilus Original formula or Natren which work very well, always. I
cannot tell the strength of the formulas they used as all of the products
are none available here in the US. 1/2 teaspoon twice daily of a powder
taken before meals???

Appropriate use of a probiotic is just before bed, on an empty stomach
while on the antibiotic (it will be immediately killed by the antibiotic
when taken during the day)to protect gut function while on the drug
and for about a week following to restore flora. None of the bacteria
taken during antibiotic use will survive but taken during the night there
is a 10 hour window to help maintain gut health by production of
byproducts by the bacteria that keepthe gut wall functioning and
produce certain fats needed by the gut wall cells. The dose is 3-4
of the Jarrodophilus taken all at once. Yogurt is much too weak to work.
My hunch is their formula is also. Even though the bacteria is active
it must also be VERY potent (lots of living bacteria).

The study is simplistic and shows limited knowledge of the gut ecosystem:

We used a 2×2 factorial design to test (a) an oral powder, either
Lactobac (containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium
longum) or placebo (malto-dextrin powder) and (b) a vaginal pessary,
either Femilac (containing L rhamnosus, L delbrueckii, L
acidophilus, and Streptococcus thermophilus) or placebo (maltodextrin).
Active treatments and placebos were identical in
appearance. Participants took half a teaspoon of powder twice
daily 20 minutes before meals and one pessary at night for 10
days (during the six day antibiotic course and for four days after).
Independent examination of the treatments on three
occasions (by the microbiology laboratory of Royal Women’s
Hospital, Melbourne) confirmed lactobacillus viability and accuracy
of labelling of active and placebo treatment.
