WHO and UNICEF have worked together on developing and supporting training
courses on breastfeeding at different levels. The courses have been adapted
at national level in industrialised and developing countries. It is
important to learn what are the objectives and purposes of each course. I
attach two websites with full information of two training courses that have
been mentioned in the list.

1-Certicicate Course in Breastfeeding: Practice and Policy. This is a course
designed for doctors and other senior health professionals who are involved
in national or local breastfeeding programs. The course is to increase
health professional's scientific knowledge of lactation and skills for
protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. It is a 4 week course
with the collabotation of WHO and UNICEF that runs every summer (July
3-28/2000) at the ICH of the University of London.

2-WHO/UNICEF Breatfeeding counselling: A training course. (also called 40
hour course). Duration: two weeks. This course is designed for health
workers who care for mothers and yourng children in maternity facilities,
hospitals and health centres. These includes mid-wives, community nurses,
pediatric nurses and doctors. The course aims at training health workers on
breastfeeding counselling skills for effective support to mothers. The
course requires a trained director that is familiar with the materials and
training technique. The course has been done in many countries and languages
(Spanish, English and French) with the support of UNICEF and WHO and the
logistics done at local level. For more information contact: Your national
