With the bowel surgery, I imagine the baby was intubated. That could have resulted in oral aversion or even some damage to the vocal chords. Per hasp the baby could more easily accept paced cup feedings, syringe feedings, or some other alternative method that does not go too far in the mouth and, as Laura Wheeler suggested, feed in smaller amounts more frequently.
