I am working with a mother whose 11 month old baby has a tight labial frenulum and just today was told by a ped dentist that the baby also has an underbite.  Baby has always had trouble latching, mom has had sore cracked nipples, and mastitis 2 times in the last 4 months. Baby has had nursing blister on upper lip in his early weeks.  She only experiences the problems on the left side, as of now she is not bf on the left side as she heals the crack and mastitis.  The nipple wounds appear 1st on the nipple tip, and extend to top portion of nipple.  Birth was normal, as per mom (not posterior, traumatic, forceps).  Baby has been seeing a chiropractor.  Mother has used antibiotic ointment on cracks, and feels it does help her heal. Currently taking antibiotics for mastitis.  Does not feel she gets plugged ducts.  May be unrelated, but will include; baby has a lazy left eye, seasonal allergies for which he takes zyrtec,  and the ENT said baby had
"pockets of fluid by the ears"  (but no symptoms of ear infections) seems to be developing and growing normally.  Tomorrow they have an appt with an ENT to get the upper labial frenulum clipped, however mom is not comfortable having baby put under general anesthesia as of yet, and they have told her that is how they do things, so she may not be having it done.  The ped dentist would also clip (and I think without a general), but he will not allow parents to come back with child, and she is not comfortable with that either.  Right now she would like to help resolve the pain, nipple wounds and mastitis.  I am wondering if the underbite combined with the labial frenulum is causing the difficulties, and if clipping would help some.  Besides positioning what could she do for the underbite?
