One of my favorite things about the field of lactation consulting is the
incredible diversity of the backrounds of so many of us. To the extent that
we do not all come from the medical model perspective, we have differing
points of view, different approaches, and experiences with which to evaluate
our various challenges. Even tho I do not consider myself a "medical person"
I had some degree of familiarity with medical terms, protocols etc. from
working as a private duty nurse (glorified babysitter for most of my cases)
as I worked my way through school to become a wood shop teacher and energy
management specialist. Seems like a far cry from the the starting point, but
first one baby, then another and finally the third convinced me that working
with mothers and babies was to be my calling. (Sure ain't in it for the
money!)
If the LC field became so restrictive as to allow only those who entered via
the professional medical field, I think we would lose some potentially
wonderful practitioners who could add so much from their various perspectives
as our profession is emerging and seeking its place in the health care field.
Just my NSHO on the subject. Love to hear other points of view to compare
and contrast - that's how we grow and flourish!
