Human milk has been shown to have many trophic factors which promote gut
maturation, and its many immunologic factors help to protect babies from
many complications. Necrotizing enterocolitis is 20 times as common in
artificially fed babies and sepsis is also much more common. Ask the
neonatologists to provide proof that their predigested abm is safer than
the mother's own milk. Bet they can't. In most cases, if the baby can be
fed, it should receive its mother's milk. Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC.
