Patricia, we have a hospital here with that same policy!  No matter what,
they will not dismiss NICU babies until they take 8 bottles in 24 hours,
regardless of what parents want :(
It is just a few miles (light years!) from where I had my twins, at 33
weeks, where they were gavage fed, per my request, until I was able to
nurse them on day 4 or 5. (can't remember which).  We left the hospital
together on about day 6 without them ever having a single bottle or nipple
of any kind, other than the right kind, of course!  What a difference a few
miles can make, let alone a whole ocean!
