We had a wonderful pediatrician when my 4 kids were small. He gave the best advice ever on starting solids. He said, "When you think the baby might be ready to start solids, cook rice for dinner, and take one kernel of cooked rice and place it on the baby's tongue and see what she does with it. If she can chew it and manipulate it to the back of her throat and swallow it and look eagerly at you for more, she's ready to start solids. If she can't manipulate it properly or chokes on it or tongue thrusts it back out, wait another month and try again." My kids all passed the rice test somewhere between 6 & 9 months, and began solids then. Easy.
