Greetings, i received a call tonight from a mom of a one year old and a 4
year old. the one year old has been battling sinus/adenoid infections for
months, and she just took him to see an ENT. The ENT suggested
adenoidectomy, but told her that if she stopped
breastfeedign at night, he might not need the surgery. He blames the
exposure to colds from the year old, coupled with night nursing (he claims
that milk pools and provides a medium for bacterial growth, etc.) for the
recurrent infections. I know babies who aren't breastfed have higher rates
of ear infection, and that the milk pooling and tube shape arguments do
not hold true for BF as they do for bottling- but what about adenoids? my
gut tells me this guy doesn't know what he is talking about re: the
breastfeeding component, even if he does know a lot about adenoids (about
which i know nothing!)

has anyone encountered any studies re: breastfeeding, or nightime
breastfeeding, and adenoid/sinus inflammation? And, not specifically
related to breastfeeding - if anyone knows of studies or articles about
adenoidectomy in general, especially alternatives to the surgery, or
reasons to steer clear of the surgery (if there are any reasons or risks),
i'd sure appreciate the pointers, as this mom is a friend, not solely a client.

Thank you

Lyla
