Ann,

The overwhelming reason at our hospital for supplementation of breastfed
babies is maternal request---almost always due to mom's fear that she
doesn't have enough milk when the baby starts cluster feeding. There is a
huge lack of knowledge about how breastfeeding is supposed to work, and
every day I have moms tell me" the baby wasn't getting enough so I had to
give a bottle." This is even after my routine "warning" about how cluster
feeding will probably happen around 24 hours of age and the staff
reinforcing that (mostly).

I have actually been doing an informal survey, and over the past several
weeks, the percentage of breastfed babies who are supplemented ranges from
50-75% on any given day.
