Dear Lactnetters,

Thought I'd share this with you. I am taking care of a mother and her 2 month old
daughter. At 2 wks. the mom contacted me because the baby was "bouncing off the
walls." We tried various methods of calming the baby - none of which worked. I
suspected caffeine, but when the mother cut out the coffee, there was very little
improvement. At one month, the mother was ready to tear her hair out. The baby
wasn't gassy, but restless and cranky. I'm not a big believer in the link between
diet and fussiness, but questioning the mother again, I found she was drinking large
amounts of diet juices containing nutrasweet. (She had also done so during the
pregnancy.) Five days after taking the mom off the juice, the baby was a different
person. Since many new mothers want to cut down the calories after birth, this is
one to look out for.
