In response to questions about "clicking sounds", often when working with
an infant as a chiropractor, I find dysfunction at the temporomandibular
joint as a result of inadvertent traction during delivery or possibly
positional strain in utero. Release of the submandibular muscle tension
and pterygoid tension and restoration of smooth temporomandibular
function often improves the infants ability to latch on and the "clicking
sounds" disappear. Once more, there might be a variety of reasons for the
sounds besides those mentioned (tongue tied or submucosal cleft).
