Pam,
You mention in your post about checking area hospitals for their class
specifics for the disability client. But, you don't mention about checking with
those in private practice. I'd recommend you check out your resources for those
in private practice. There are individuals who teach prenatal breastfeeding
classes, prenatal childbirth classes, and other types of classes who are not
affiliated with a hospital. These options could meet the needs of a client with
disabilities more effectively than converting a hospital program in an
attempt to meet the special needs of a client with disabilities. This model of
dedicating a teacher's aide for one-on-one attention for a client with
disabilities is presently taking place within the school systems after all. Students
with disabilities have rights to remain streamlined within the classroom setting,
but not without an aide or a system that enhances their abilities to learn.
Sounds right to me that we continue this type of educational model within our
capacities as adult learners and within our realm of practice. Adult learners
are also addressed in like-fashion as the youngsters within the school system
for having individual needs met by alterations in the system.
