I got to conf late Fri afternoon :-( Small's plane got rained in so we
didn't hear her. Chris Mulford has some neat BF songs, so if she is in
your area, get her to sing them :-) The best talks I heard were Sun am.
Dr Wah Wong reviewed 10 years with WHO's 10 steps (I was amazed that it has
been 10 years.)

There are 14,800 + BFH (Baby Friendly Hospitals.) Does the fact that 20
some are in US tell the rest of the world what we are dealing with here?
Give you some perspective?

The WHO study concluded that the evidence is substantial and justifies
extending BFHI.

The 10 steps work best as an integrated piece, combined gets better results
than using the steps singly (duh). He reviewed the 10 steps, something we
all need to do from time to time as we sometimes focus on one or another,
as it is an integrated piece.

Strong hospital policies are required. Otherwise things just slip along
"as usual."

Training for staff needs to be adequate length. KAP- Knowledge alone is
not enough. Attitude is so important. Practice with knowledge helps
change attitudes. BFHI training needs to be compulsory, minimum 18 hrs
over 3 days. Strong specific BF policies
[consequences for not following policies is also needed ]

Restrict free supplies of breast milk substitutes.

All moms need guidance and support.

He proposes step 11. Ten Steps tied to Int Marketing Code.

Step 12 Embrace non BF moms, don't exclude them. "Let's not judge them,
but love and support them."

Dr. Wong also sings! "You've got to accentuate the positive, Eliminate the
negative and latch on for lots of mother's milk! Don't mess with
breastmilk substitutes, No! Just stick with mother's milk! ---exclusively
for six months of life!"

The conference syllabus would be a valuable addition to your BF book
collection. Many of the speakers are using power point slides and they are
all in the book. Listening to tape with book at hand would be almost as
good as going to conf!

Last session was Nommsen-Rivers and Heinig with just crunched data on what
is normal for BF baby in first few days. Can't wait to see that info in
print! Get the tape, info not in syllabus.

Of course part of the fun and work of ILCA is the displays. New posters,
and books etc. Sorry I didn't pay much attention to pumps as our ILCA
chapter, LaCTo was selling Dr. Dermer's new booklet "Breastfeeding: The
Physician's Role." I was struck by the fact that we were the ONLY chapter
peddling anything this year!

Mexico is July 18-22, 2001 in Acapulco and July 24-28, 2002 is Boca Raton.
2003 is AUSTRALIA (start saving!)

We allneed to get to BF conferences because it's not just what you learn,
but the recharging of your batteries!

Please say a prayer this am for my boss who is having a cardiac valve
replaced and say a prayer for me to have the grace and good sense I need
to take care of all the kids by myself for a while. Sincerely, Pat in
SNJ
