Okay here's a good one for you guys. While watching CNN at lunch today,
they did a snippet on this adorable newborn elephant. Apparently his mom
abandoned him and the zoo tried to feed him EBM from an Asian elephant but
it wouldn't work because the composition is too different from the African
Species that he is. So they found an African elephant mommie whose baby had
recently been put to sleep (unfixable problems). And guess what - they
called in a "lactation expert" who rigged a human pump and now they are
pumping and feeding ON DEMAND around the clock, rotating several handlers
(generous mommy elephant refused to let baby suckle). The zoo keeper said
the baby will be fed EBM for 6 months and then a special formula for the
next 6 YEARS!! They will be trying to figure out the composition of African
elephant milk and said it will be a nutritional EXPERIMENT!!! Any of that
last part sound familiar??
