Many of the ineffective breast pumps are made by companies that sell 
baby bottles. I suspect there is a lot of ignorance, that these 
companies know nothing about breastfeeding, and they are trying to make 
breast pumps so that breastfeeding mothers will use their bottles as 
well as to have something to sell to bf mothers.

The main formula companies in the US are subsidiaries of pharmaceutical 
giants. Ross Labs is an arm of Abbott. Mead Johnson is owned by 
Bristol-Myers Squibb. Wyeth is a pharmaceutical firm in it's own right.

I asked my husband (a former financial information specialist) how 
non-specialists could find information on parent companies. He said you 
can go to http://sec.gov/ (US Securities and Exchange Commission) and 
look under EDGAR. There's a tutorial on how to use EDGAR filings. 
Basically, you look for any publicly traded company, and the filings 
will include all their relationships to other companies.
