Hi Monique!
Interesting that you have someone in need here in the Buffalo area
needing a mammogram. This is one of my biggest frustrations with
breastfeeding women being refused mammograms until they wean. This also
happens to be a call I get at least once a month here in the Buffalo area. I
have had a mammogram done myself here in Buffalo at age 30 while nursing a 2
month old for a baseline reading so I do know of at least one group that will
do the mammograms on lactating breasts if pushed. It is Windsong Radiology
ask for Dr. Janet Sung. The Dr. who read mine said it was an easy to read
scan and even though I was lactating and would have denser breasts at age 30.
Although I did have the exoerience of the receptionist being extremely rude
when she realized I was breastfeeding. She told me they don't do mammograms
on breastfeeding women. I was too flustered to have good comebck for her
misinformation. My own Mother died of breast cancer at age 49 in 1991, 10
years ago on Saturday. Her local Dr. dismissed her concerns of a lump in her
breast at age 37 because she was "too young".
I would tell this mother that having an ultrasound done of the breast is
also an option. I just read a study on Medscape that said doing both
mammogram and ultrasound was most effective at spotting abnormalities. I
didn't ask if I could have my mammogram done, I told them I was going to have
it done and my midwife made phone calls to see who was most capable of
reading a lactating breast. She needs to nurse well before the mammogram to
have the breasts as "empty" as possible.
The Buffalo, NY area has a very high breast cancer rate and I find it
incredibly frustrating when especially "older" mothers are told that they
must wait until they wean. One of the Dr.'s at my OB group told one of my
clients that she had to pump and dump for three days after the mamogram - so
you can see we still live with a lot of bad breastfeeding info. here. The
only reason I have seen for not doing it , is that it is more difficult to
read a lactating breast. I would find the best Dr. and the possibility of
finding out something instead of waiting another 4 years I would think to be
impt.

"I'm looking for a HCP contact in the Buffalo, NY area willing to do a
mammogram on a lactating breast. Mom had a baseline mammogram at age
36. She is currently 43 and BFing a baby with no end to lactation in
sight. She is getting the No Wean, No Mammogram story. A HCP contact
willing to receive and read a mammogram would be acceptable also.
Thanks in advance for your help with this matter.
