Hi Fellow Lactnetters!
I have been no mail for a long time now (because I was too addicted), but now
I am in need of some assistance. I figured that this was the place to go for
the information I need, because you are all so knowledgeable. Here is the
problem:
Recently, my colleagues and I were asked to meet with our 4 neonatologists
because we had informed a mom of fenugreek use to increase her milk supply. At
the same meeting several issues were brought up. The first was that they DID
NOT want us to tell moms of Fenugreek but instead to tell them of Reglan. We
had stopped doing that because the other docs in the area are not familiar
with how to prescribe it and we were also afraid of the side effects. Their
thinking is that there is medical research on the Reglan but only anecdotal
info on Reglan. So, we agreed not to mention it first (A little control issue
here, by the way.)
Then we discussed supplementer use (which we are not allowed to discuss with
the mom until discussing with them, per a memo from last year). The docs are
afraid that the baby cannot coordinate the suck-swallow reflex with a
supplementer and so choose to use bottles to supplement the babies instead.
DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE TO ANYONE????? I am thinking that they are very
confused and would like to discuss this again with one of them but he is a
real stickler on research info and I am wondering if anyone has anything that
they can direct me to. I would be especially interested in what Dr. Nancy
Wight feels about this and also Dr. Jack Newman but I would love anyone's info
on this.
These doctors admit that they have taken away the freedom for us to do what we
know and are trained how to do but it does not make it any easier to digest.
They have never breastfed (one is a woman ), and do not know how important it
is to a woman who had planned to breastfeed and then delivers prematurely.
Please email me privately as I remain no mail.
Thanks in advance,
