A cool book (I think titled "The Evolution of Everyday Things") on how
certain
commonplace items (paper clips, post-it notes, silverware, zippers) were
developed, talks about how the phrase "form follows function" isn't exactly
right. It's more like"form follows failure" - each failure in trying to
reach a goal refines the inventor's product. I never thought of it for
formula, but of course it's the same thing. Form follows failure.
