This is my first posting, but that lovely reprint of
your posting in 97 was too beautiful to ignore.
Thanks Pat for a lovely story we can save and think
about to share with grandmothers we encounter in our
practices. I have not yet had the privilege of
becoming a grandmother. My daughters are 25 and 22
and neither show any inclination of even thinking
about marriage or kids yet. Many of the postings in
the last 7 or 8 weeks that I have been on Lactnet have
reminded me of my beautiful breastfeeding experience
with my two girls.

I am making word files of postings on various topics
that I feel are useful to keep, and have had fond
remembrances of experiences with other postings. I
did long term nursing with both kids and nursed
through a pregnancy and did tandem nursing for over a
year, till we had an "I'm a Big Girl Now" Party for my
oldest who was 4 years and a half. She helped me make
the cake. I identified with the mom who talked about
mixed feelings about nursing during pregnancy and the
discomfort. (sorry, I forgot who posted that two or
three weeks ago--it mentioned the 3 hour night nursing
marathons). Feliz told me, when asked, that the milk
now tasted different about the time that the colostrum
should have come in. I limited nursing time when I
was too sore. I just told her my nipples hurt and
that she could nurse to a count of 20. Sometimes I
counted, and sometimes I was more relaxed than that
and let her nurse as long as she wanted. At that
point in time I had a double bed in her room and would
usually go to her and might lay with her quite a while
after we stopped nursing and might fall asleep there.
After I delivered I was usually back to family bed
scenario with two nursing kids instead of one.

To Tammy who started the thread on Grandmothers, I did
once have a grandparents class, many years ago. All
my stuff is currently in storage, but hopefully we
will be in our new house in the next couple weeks and
maybe I can find it. If so, I will e-mail you
privately.

I work and in a very rural setting, a setting where
many people do not have cars, where there are no
street addresses, and where about 80% of the new moms
do not have phones. While two previous individuals
have been in my job, no real structures for supporting
breastfeeding moms have been put in place. We are
operating under a grant to implement changes that
might decrease the incidence of diabetes on the
reservation. One of our goals is to have at least 75%
of moms initiate breastfeeding and perhaps at least
50% exclusively breastfeed for at least two months, by
the end of year 5. This is based on the Pima study
that showed significantly less diabetes in children
years after moms exclusively breastfed for at least
two months. I'm also working with gestational
diabetes and we will be following up with the moms
afterward to encourage them to breastfeed their babies
and to make lifestyle changes that will decrease the
incidence of diabetes in them and their children. If
anyone is working in a similar setting and has any
ideas I might try, I would welcome your suggestions
privately or on Lactnet.
