Need assist, please. I saw a mom today that has 34 wk (corrected to 38
wk) twin girls. Mom nursed her now 4 yr old girl for approx 1 yr. Mom
has been pumping with a hospital grade double piston pump since
delivery. She is pumping 4-5 ounces q 3 hrs and thinks that her
supply has decreased a little. The girls were in NICU and were/are
bottle fed. They just won't latch onto the breasts. They are now taking
75 ml of EBM q 4 hrs. Mom is very concerned that they get "enough" due
to their premie status. Mom has avg sized breasts with well everted
nipples, milk pours. Both babes root but just suck at... Mom is
getting very discouraged. It does not appear that she has much help at
home. She lives an hour away from the hospital and does not feel that
LC services will be covered by her ins. She plans to return to work in
4 weeks. I got the girls to nurse with the nipple shield. Their test
weights increased 12 & 18 ml after 15-20 min. Now Mom plans to attempt
BRF, then go to the shield, then supplement EBM via bottle, then pump,
Oh and then she'll do everything else expected of her. I doubt that she
will even consider the SNS. Do you guys have any other suggestions?
I'm sure this sounds really overwhelming to her.
