Hi all,
As a person with chronic thyroid issues, I can tell you that among the
"negatives" are lovely little things like substantially decreased bone density
(studies indicate average of 13% lower than women not on thyroid supplements), and
an increased impairment of the gland itself, as it becomes dependent on the
supplements to do its work. Very important to find a doctor who does not treat
the patient as a statistic when comparing her bloodwork to the lab normal
range. Need someone who looks at the patient and what she's going through
symptomatically, regardless of her lab values.

Using me as an example, I am clinically severely underactive (constipated,
freezing cold, depressed, hair falling out, rapid weight gain, etc.) when my
blood says I'm "mid-normal range", especially on the TSH. Most docs looking at
just the blood would not consider a supplement (nor would they give credence to
my symptoms) unless I read out of normal range.

Also helpful to find a doc who askes questions about diet, so things like
iron and calcium and iodine intake can be monitored so they don't interfere with
meds uptake or mask symptoms.
