Hi Betsy,
High oestrogen rather than low oestrogen is an issue in relactation/induced
lactation so the concern with regards oestrogen would be whether she is on
HRT...if she is, that will likely have a deliterious impact on milk
production. I would not expect that prolactin levels would be affected by
her being post-menopausal. Maximising breast stimulation (raising prolactin)
and milk removal will maximise milk production. Grandmothers relactating is
not unusual in many developed country contexts, the significance of being
post-menopausal is not really known.
I think we look for barriers to relactation because we don't have confidence
in it. Interestingly, when I was talking with some aid workers from Pakistan
recently about how relactation is perceived in the west they were
incredulous. "But they have enough food" was the comment from one (and the
intent behind, why would women have trouble with relactation if they were
well nouished?).

Subject: adoptive nursing during menopause

I have searched in archives and could find little.

57 year old mom, no menstral period x 1 year. Has 1 day old from surrogate
pregnancy. Surrogate is pumping for 3 days for baby to have colostrum.

Mom is latching baby with feeding cues and is producing clear fluid from
breasts.

I know there is anecdotal info re grammas nursing into 70's and 80's.

Am I right in thinking that estrogen and prolactin are declining in
menopause so
milk supply is an issue for this mom? She is considering milk bank supply
and
using SNS at breast.

Here is one study I found re to attempting to stimulate prolactin.

Anyone else have experience with this type of nursing situation.

thanks
