ok, so yes, normal, lactating breasts will just go the way of other accepted inevitabilities in American society? non-insulin producing pancreases, non-functioning thyroids, prolapsed rectums, non-digesting stomachs, leaky guts.... and these "syndromes" aren't problems to be understood (and even mourned) /// just fixed?

who do you mean by we? Lactivists? LCs? old hippies like me? because i think that for MOST women in our society that day is TODAY, a failed milk supply is a setback but not a tragedy... not when there's breast- shaped silicon nipples and organic goat's formula!

i look forward to the day that when a woman can't breastfeed she doesn't just shrug her shoulders and so "oh well" (but secretly pleased b/c she can now bottle feed guilt free) but is truly devastated.. (and i'm not talking about the women who seek us out). maybe one day women will see that to lose the right to breastfeed their baby without pumps, and supplementers and modified cows milk is a loss of something far greater than just a simple circumstance of physical logistics... when there's enough women out there who see an inability to feed their infant as an out and out CATASTROPHE then maybe people will start giving a d@mn about rising hormone imbalances, insulin resistance, thyroid problems, lack of maternity leave, unrealistic pressures placed on women, etc.

ever the idealist,

Subject: "normal" breasts?

"I have very mixed feelings about this site... although comforting to =
read the comments that by sharing images of their breasts, women are =
finding real comfort knowing they're not alone.. i wonder if there will =
be a new grief to cope with when some of them find they cannot =
breastfeed."

I dunno. There's reassurance in numbers. Seeing so many quirky (not =
perky) breasts, and seeing that most of them really do make milk, feels =
really reassuring to me. =20

I look forward to the day when we can be *unhappy* about a failed milk =
supply, but not *devastated*. Because the solution is to a) go to the =
store and buy canned human milk. Not as good as our own, but not a =
tragedy. And b) hook up a really simple supplementer - no muss no fuss, =
very little cleaning, very short learning curve - and sail off into the =
sunset with it. Heck, maybe the canned milk will even be available *in* =
a supplementer! Made of something biodegradable that can just be =
tossed.

We've become totally accustomed to glasses, canes, tooth replacements, =
hearing aids, corrective shoes, insulin, thyroid replacement drugs, even =
tutors for our dyslexia. We don't *like* needing any of these. But =
neither do we believe ourselves to be fundamentally less of a person for =
needing them. Someday, someday, breastfeeding will be so commonplace =
and breastfeeding problems will be so commonly dealt with that the woman =
who needs a breastfeeding aid will just keep on feeding her baby and not =
feel herself diminished by the humanity of imperfection. I like to =
think the site is a small step in that direction.
