Theresa: In the real hospital world when there are
limitied options (as it seems with this situation)
don't let all the negative research findings and BF
stories stand in the way of what needs to be done.
These pieces of information might show you the
dangers...make you aware of the pitfalls, but always
remenmber...mom and baby have strong natural
inclinations to be together and nurse. Build on that.
In my clinical days in a hospital where most
deliveries were "assisted" with epidurals, most babies
did nurse and did fairly well. The moms were
coached...supported... and babies were with them a
good deal of the time. Encourage mom to sleep as much
as possible and that means few visitors! Dim the
lights in the room before and during feedings, teach
mom and dad to look for feeding cues, find the most
comfortable position for mom, encourage skin to skin
with mom and dad...The hospital stay is brief, so be
prepared to refer her to a good support person or
group in the community. There are some things you
can't go thru...but you can get around.

PS: Research is research...use it...don't let it use
you!
Anne Andrianos...Give my regards to Dr. Anderson
