Hello, Rachel.
This baby seems to have sensory problems, considering that he can not
accept your finger in his mouth and his suck is disorganized even with a
bottle nipple. I have seen CST and pediatric chiropractic help both with lowering
palates to normal levels and with relieving sensory problems. The first time
I actually saw for myself how a palate can be lowered, I was quite surprised.
At the time, our literature only talked about the various palate formations
and how they can affect breastfeeding, but did not indicate that palates could
be changed in any way. I was working with a mother whose baby had the highest
palate I had ever come across. To be honest, it was so high that I wondered
how the baby could breath through her nose when the breast was in her mouth!
This baby had mom's nipples very bloody. On baby's third appointment with the
chiropractor, I went along to observe the chiropractor work on the baby.
Before the appointment actually started, two-year-old brother started climbing
the walls. As mom went to retrieve him, baby started crying. Since I am mom's
friend as well as her LC, mom told me to stick my finger in baby's mouth so
she'd stop crying (even though I didn't have any gloves with me). To my shock,
there was a noticeable drop in the palate from what I had observed in my offic
e prior to the chiropractic work, and this was in just two visits. (We hadn't
actually started the third appointment yet--were still in the waiting room.)

The chiropractor and I had already been working "together" on babies
for a couple years (and he'd been working on my daughter longer than that), so
we have a pretty good working relationship. When we got into the patient
room, I expressed my surprise that the palate had actually changed. He gave me
one of those teenager "duh" looks and said "of course!". I explained how in my
field we knew that there were variations in palates, but we didn't know they
could be changed. Turns out that in his field, they've known for years that
this happens with treatment!
I would definitely suggest that this mom try CST and/or pediatric
chiropractic.
