I probably missed several postings and don't have time to go back and look
them up right now but when we teach the cross cradle hold.....we are achieving
much better latches and less sore nipples. The mother can SEE better in this
position (of course...most moms can....not all moms, of course) and if she has
the head held properly she has control. The butt is being held by her
forearm/elbow and she can quickly pull the baby up. I have Dad place a baby blanket
under the head/mom's hand to held support the weight of the head after the
baby is latched. I don't have a problem with babies getting too high up onto the
breast in this position if it is taught properly. The C-Section mothers may
do better with the football hold (American Football!) for a while. I have yet
to see a new Mom do perfect with the cradle hold. The baby is too high up
and most have sore nipples before 24 hours. I have seen mother's trying to do a
cross cradle hold incorrectly, without supporting the head or the butt is not
held by the forearm/elbow, etc. And some mother's have too short of arms and
too big of babies to do this position well.
