Jennifer, La Leche League has, for a long time, discussed using meat
(typically chicken, but why not turkey?) as a first solid. It makes sense.
What the baby begins to need more of in the 2nd half of the first 12 months
is iron and protein. Lactose, the major componant of milk, is a carb. Why
add cereal or fruits, which are more carbs? If the meat could be purchased
from some place that sells range fed animals with no hormones or antibiotics
(we can get that in Austin at several markets) then puree-ing this in its
own juice and perhaps a bit of pumped milk might make a nice, soupy solid
for this baby. She can pour the puree into ice cube trays, freeze, and pop
out individual servings into baggies and microwave as she needs them. I
think squashes like butternut and acorn would be rich and nutritious. She
might try ripe, mashed avacado as well.
