At some of our local hospitals mums are expected to bring their own
diapers, kleenex and sanitary pads. I don't really see why the hospital
couldn't extend this to asking mums who choose formula feeding to bring
their own formula with them to the hospital. Then the hospitals would
not need to accept donations of formula nor incur the cost of buying it
themselves. With diapers and pads mums are given the initial few
supplies after delivery but are expected to have their own supply
ready. The same could be done for formula. If mums or nurses had to go
to all the trouble of preparing bottles of formula instead of using
those convenient little ready to use bottles maybe a few would give
breastfeeding a second look. The other option would be for the hospital
to buy the formula but pass the cost onto the parents. Here in Canada
passing the cost onto the parents would be very radical. The only cost
usually passed on to hospital patients are their bedside phone charges.
