HI Everyone,
I am looking for references and what others do when they are working with a
mother who has known food allergies or a baby that has developed food allergies
and there is an order to supplement a baby.
I had attended a conference a few years ago on the topic of breastfeeding and
allergies. The speaker stated that if there is a family history then
hypoallergenic formula should be used when supplements are ordered. She did not have
a reference list with this talk.
I had a case this week where a second baby had a positive coombs and needed
light treatment. The pediatrician also ordered supplements. The mother said
her first child dev many food allergies at 6 months old and she also has some
food allergies. I discussed with the parents the option of hypoallergenic
formula and they decided that is what they wanted to try.
When I presented this to the staff you would have thought I was asking them
to travel to the moon. They said they would have to mix the Nutramigen and
this was a pain, they would need a doctors order and that they never heard of
this request with this history and therefore did not believe it was necessary.
I don't want to go down the issues about these orders more I need the
information of using hypoallergenic formula.
Thanks for any help.
