Not too long ago, I asked for help in what to say to a friend - she's
adopting a child from far away, been doing the hormone regimen, pumping,
everything. She was so frustrated with "how little" she was getting.

I can't even remember what I said to her, but one thing sticks out, "Your
baby is working just as hard to hang on until he's in your arms."

The quantity didn't matter anymore. She was working hard for her baby, and
he for her.

She leaves Thursday to bring him home. Her Ethiopian son was born on her
birthday, and he looks so much like her, it is astounding. As soon as I saw
his picture, I could barely breathe for saying, "Oh, my God. He looks
exactly like you."

Somehow, when the time is right, you will say the right thing. It may not be
the perfect thing, but sometimes it is what the mother needs to hear,
however difficult it is to say.

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
