Depodur is a new long acting morphine, "morphine sulfate extended-release
liposome injection". The literature states patients need to be monitored
for 48 hours after dosing. Some of the Doc's want to start using it for
elective C-sections. We do spinals here and this med requires an epidural
cath, yes that means they will get both. The Depodur can only be
administered after delivery. I tried to look on Hale's website, but kept
getting kicked off. Depodur's booklet says "decisions should be made on
whether or not to allow nursing during the first 48 hours following DepoDur
administration". I know morphine has a low oral bioavailability (per Hale)
and we use Duramorph and Astramorph without question. Does anyone have
info on the extended release being more of a problem? I didn't attend the
inservice, so all of what I know is from the little booklet. I was asked
by my manager if Lactation would have any concerns with this med. (She
doesn't really want us to use it for other reasons) Thanks for your help.
I'll keep trying Hale's website as well. -Mandy Frost, MS, RD, IBCLC
